For the potato gratin, first boil the potatoes, peel and slice them. Grate the cheese.

Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Grease a baking dish.

Put a layer of potato slices in the dish first and sprinkle some cheese on top. Repeat until the potatoes are used up or the dish is full. Finish with a layer of potatoes (but there should still be some cheese left).

Whisk the egg with milk, salt and pepper.

Empty over the potatoes and add another thick layer of cheese on top.

Bake the potato gratin for about 45 minutes on the lowest rack.
