Remove peel from potatoes and cut into slices, fry in sufficient fat until crisp, season with salt. In a greased ovenproof dish put layers of fried potatoes, meat cut into cubes, chopped onions, deboned and diced herrings and steamed kitchen herbs. The last layer should be potatoes.

Mix whipped cream with flour, season with salt and pour over the pate. Sprinkle grated cheese and put butter flakes on top. Bake in a heated oven for about 40 minutes.

Author’s note: There are many recipes for cobbler pie. Depending on your budget and taste, you can make a pure herring pie, use leftover poultry and game, or put a colorful mixture in the mold.
