For the glazed chestnuts, cut the chestnuts crosswise on the round side and bake in a preheated oven at 200 °C for 10 minutes.

While still hot, peel them and remove the inner furry skin.

Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and turned caramel brown.

Add the chestnuts and stir briefly. Add the water, salt and simmer on low heat for about half an hour. Stir again and again.

Glazed chestnuts are ready when there is almost no liquid left in the pot and they are covered with a nice layer of caramel.
